Development of a Hydrostratigraphic Model for Quadra Island - Jerome Lesemann

Jerome Lesemann is Chair of the Earth Science Department at Vancouver Island University. He holds an MSc from the University of Alberta and a PhD from Simon Fraser University. At VIU, Jerome teaches Quaternary Geology and Hydrogeology courses (amongst others) with a strong focus on water and resource sustainability.  Jerome will be introducing a project that he and his hydrogeology students have just begun with a community-based group on Quadra Island who is taking an active interest in managing their groundwater resources for long-term sustinability. As Is the case with many areas, there are a couple of aquifers that are mapped but not much else in terms of a framework for study. As a result, Jerome’s students will be working on developing a hydrostratigraphic model for the southern portion of Quadra Island. Their work flow includes assessing and standardizing a few hundred water well logs, some site visits to sample the aquifer and aquitard sediments, some lab-based estimates of hydraulic conductivity, modelling the subsurface in LeapFrog, and assessing the vulnerability of the aquifers.
