   Well Location

An improperly located well can lead to problems with well water contamination.

Locating your well properly is the first step in ensuring that you will not have contamination problems in the future.

  • Locate on high ground. This will protect the well from surface water contamination from flooding or runoff.
  • Do not locate the well in a location that will be difficult to maintain, such as a basement, beneath a paved driveway, or under powerlines.
  • Locate the well as far away from potential contamination sources as possible. The wellhead should be a least 30m (100ft) from potential contamination sources (yours and your neighbours) including:
    • septic fields
    • dog runs
    • chicken coops
    • animal ranges
    • compost
    • garbage cans
    • refuse piles
    • herbicide or fertilizer use or storage
    • above and below ground storage tanks
    • parking areas
